La Posada Offers Two Locations for Free Memory Screening

Casa Community Services will host free memory screening on Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 10 am. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Appointments are available by calling 393-6800; walk-ins also are welcome. At Community Connect, the free screenings will be available during the same hours with no appointment necessary.

Casa Community Services is located at 780 South Park Centre Ave., at the entrance to the La Posada retirement community. Community Connect is in Suite 500 at the Continental Shopping Plaza, next to the CVS Pharmacy.

This brief screening is part of the National Memory Screening Day initiative of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Staff at Casa will provide the brief, confidential screening that can indicate whether an additional check up by a qualified healthcare professional is needed.

It is estimated that more than five million Americans have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. It’s commonly thought of only as an “old person’s disease,” but 200,000 are under age 65. Memory loss is just one Alzheimer’s warning sign. Others, for example, include personality changes and problems managing money.

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease can only be made by a health professional. The screenings held at Casa Community Services may indicate if a follow-up is advised but it is not a diagnosis.

Casa’s Adult Day Services Program Director Jeannie Maldonado commented: “We know from individuals who have dementia and who come to Adult Day Services, and from their caregivers, that almost everyone would have liked to know their diagnosis earlier. Our screening may be the first step in a path toward diagnosis and treatment.”

These questions might help you decide if you should be screened. If you answer “yes” to any of them, you might benefit from a memory screening.

•  Do I have trouble concentrating?

•  Have I become lost when walking or driving?
•  Have my family or friends noticed changes in my mood, behavior, personality, or desire to do things?
