La Posada Suspends Preschool and Adult Day Services beginning March 30, 2020!

La Posada Suspends Operations At Los Niños de Valle Preschool and Adult Day Service Programs.

Effective Monday, March 30, 2020, La Posada will suspend the preschool program at the Los Niños del Valle and the Adult Day program at Posada Life Community Services. Attendees of both programs have been notified, and will also be contacted when the programs can be resumed. Earlier, the Senior Lunch Program announced it will be distributing frozen meals to its regular attendees, rather than eating at the Community Center.

This is the latest of a series of precautionary moves at La Posada to limit the potential spread of the coronavirus, with a population recognized to be at greater risk. Currently, there have been no identified cases of COVID-19 among the residents and staff of La Posada and Posada Life Community Services.

Since the awareness of higher risk levels in early March, La Posada has taken aggressive precautionary measures, including the cancellation of public events and resident gatherings, the restriction of non-essential visitation in Assisted Living and Independent Living areas, the closure of resident dining venues, and has created a new program of ‘To Your Door’ meal delivery and grocery purchases. There are approximately 750 total residents and some 600 employees at La Posada.

Other public venues at La Posada, including Posada Java, the Green Valley – Sahuarita Family History Library, and the Vensel Treasure Shoppe, suspended operations earlier in the month.

All La Posada staff are being screened daily for COVID-19 symptoms at the start of any work shift. Special employee policies for pandemic sick leave or displaced worker’s assistance have been put in place. Limited daycare will continue to be available to assist some essential La Posada employees.

La Posada will keep everyone updated on when Posada Life’s Los Niños del Valle preschool and Adult Day Services reopens. Please watch this website and La Posada social media venues for further campus-wide updates.

La Posada is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to providing an environment of well-being and enrichment for seniors. Established 33 years ago, with guidance from Tucson Medical Center and the late Keith Walden of Farmers Investment Company, La Posada was estimated in 2017 to have a $50 million annual impact on the economy of Southern Arizona, with 600 employees and active partnerships with area schools and service organizations. It is recognized nationally as a leader in innovation and accountability in the field of senior living.

For further information and media inquiries, please contact Joni Condit, La Posada CEO at 520-648-7912 or Jim Casanova, La Posada Senior Vice President at 520-648-8126.

La Posada’s Emergency Plan for Coronavirus (COVID-19). Please read and share…

La Posada logo.

Please read! La Posada’s Emergency Plan for Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The health and well-being of our residents, employees, and all of our families are of utmost importance during this unprecedented time. As we all are witnessing the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation evolving by the minute, we wanted to let families and friends know the measures we are taking to ensure the safety and well-being of residents, customers, and staff. We are following recommendations put forth by the CDC as well as the Pima County Health Department and Arizona Department of Health in an effort to protect those we serve while ensuring the continuity of essential services and care. Our executive team, under the overall guidance of La Posada’s Board of Trustees, is working together with management and resident leaders to proactively implement our Emergency Plan as needed.

One of the most important aspects of mitigating a pandemic is to slow down the spread of the infection, referred to by experts as “flattening the curve“. Importantly, this helps to avoid overwhelming our healthcare systems and allows for better treatment of those who need it, resulting in fewer deaths. It also allows time for effective testing to be distributed and hopefully the development of treatments. La Posada aims to do our part to help flatten the curve of the virus by taking measures to reduce public exposure.

Some of these measures include:

  • Seven staff and resident forums to inform about the symptoms and dangers that COVID-19 and the seasonal flu pose with particular concern for senior citizens.
  • All staff has been trained about the importance of proper handwashing. Reminder signs have been employee bathrooms.
  • Infection control protocols have all been reviewed with nursing staff throughout campus.
  • Care Management nursing staff are triaging sick residents in independent living by telephone to determine what care is needed and to assist in making arrangements to see a medical provider if needed.
  • Management is regularly checking with Green Valley Fire to align procedurally to assure the best measures in 911 calls are taken.
  • La Posada’s three Assisted Living buildings are closed to all visitors until further notice. Residents of La Joya, La Via, and La Hacienda have been asked to remain on the campus except for emergency medical care. We recognize how difficult this will be for residents and their loved ones but limiting potential exposure is a crucial element of containment of the virus.
  • Residents in independent living have been discouraged to have any visitors to campus and encouraged to voluntarily isolate in their homes.
  • No outside visitors are allowed for now in any of La Posada’s six dining rooms. The “Gourmet To Go” pick up and go service is readily available and plans to close all on-campus dining rooms will be implemented on Tuesday, March 24, and will be replaced with meal service delivery to resident homes.
  • The Continental Club for non-resident members has been temporarily suspended until further notice.
  • All group classes and off-campus trips have been canceled. Six video-taped exercise programs are available to residents on La Posada’s in-house television.
  • The monthly Resident Council meeting was closed to attendees but was broadcast live to residents in their homes.

Special Events that have been canceled include:

  • The Taste of La Posada (March 20)
  • The final Concert for a Better Community at the Shoppes
  • Farmers Market at the Shoppes (Mondays)
  • AARP Tax Services in the Recreation Center
  • Off-campus groups’ use of La Posada meeting spaces
  • The Performing Arts program at the end of March
  • Great Decisions Series
  • The Friday Resident Forums
  • Caregiver Event Day at Posada Life Community Services
  • The Community Centenarian Breakfast

Other events not mentioned are subject to change.

From all of us at La Posada, be safe and stay healthy!

Some Christmas Gifts Require You to Look Down!

The present is here
It is always here–now.
I close my eyes
and be the one with the present.
The present—a gift.
I breathe in the air around me
I breathe out.
My breath joins other breaths.
I ponder.
My eyes are wide open.
I see this glorious creation.
Here! NOW!
THE PRESENT.
THE GIFT.

Resident Reflections…A SELF-CONTAINED COMMUNITY

A SELF-CONTAINED COMMUNITY
is where I am fortunate to live
the last segment of my life—
a community of seven hundred residents
and five hundred employees, like a little town
on this one hundred fifty acres of property,
with all the food and shelter services provided,
three libraries, an observatory, a little store,
along with online shopping for personal needs,
and if I want to go outside my little town
to shop or see doctors or the larger library
I can ride the bus or the van provided
for those purposes.
I can walk or ride on the tram around
the grounds of my little town
for they are some of the most compelling features,
containing pecan trees and green grass
and multi-colored flowers,
walking trails for visiting meditation and poetry
and butterfly gardens, and even a coffee shop
for meeting friends from the larger communities,
ramadas and benches for sitting to rest,
and changing views from mountains to a river,
usually a dry river bed where one could study earth science
or wait for the excitement of water running in rainy weather.
And then the levels of care available if and when I need them—
I am grateful.

What is La Posada’s mission?

Time Management in Retirement…What’s that?

How do you manage your free time in retirement?

Do you idle and see what happens next? Or, do you set goals to accomplish retirement experiences?

Yes, we are talking about time management in retirement!

We aren’t talking about honey-do lists or the innocuous bucket lists items.  What you do in retirement  is your own choice…But, are you creating a memorable retirement or dwelling on time?

According to a Next Avenue story, many retirees wrestle with the concept of time management during retirement.  In March/April 2016, we asked La Posada residents the following question: How do you manage time in retirement?

Here are their answers…..

“What is time management?” – Anonymous

“Retirement moves too fast…Too many choices.” – Marilyn

“Do what you want when you want.” -Nancy

“Pick and choose what you want to do! Donate your time to what really matters.” -Bob

“Learn to say no. Don’t over commit yourself. Achieve what you want.” – Mary

“Use calendars and reminder apps from your mobile phone to organize your time.” -Lisa

“Do personal chores everyday. I do one hour on my interests… email, stock market, family..” – Warren

“Make an agenda for each day. What will you accomplish today? Check them off each day. If you hate an item on your agenda,  do the item.  Reward yourself for completing the items you hate. ” – Dorothy

“Again, what is time management?” – Anonymous

“Don’t dwell in the past! This is now!  Do time management by activity, not by the clock. It’s frustrating ..You end up filling time. Pick an activity you enjoy, not time” – Dwight

” I manage my time in retirement based on my mobility and devices I need to do the activity.” -Lillian

“Don’t worry. Go with the flow. Take assignments or volunteer opportunities that matter.  Learn to say no very easily.” – Pete

“Enjoy yourself with what matters.  Your not being selfish. Don’t stress yourself.  You do what you want when you want.” -James

“I take care of my dog and see what happens next!” – Verna

“Walk your dog more and use the Apple watch for activity ideas.” – Mike

“Do things that matter.” – Terry

“Do what I want to do when I want to do it!” – Pat

“What do you want at that moment?” – Kimberly

“I don’t do something I really don’t want to do.  I am happier since making this my New Year’s resolution for 2016” – Majory

“Let your day flow. See what happens and do what you like.” – Anonymous

“Never even thought about time management.” – Warren

“I have always 2 to 3 projects because I am a procrastinator…I take moments for myself then go back to the projects.”-Jocelyn

“As orderly as I can keep it… I keep routine 4 days a week on a regular basis. it keeps your life in better order.” – Bob

“Just wing it! What strikes me today I do.” – Mabel

“Decide on what I want to do…I take care of my flowers.” – Al

“We base our schedules around Precious (dog) and what we do to stay mobile.” – Jerry

Did you get all that advice?

According to La Posada retirees, what is great time management during retirement..

  • Do something you want to do
  • Learn to say no
  • Take care of who or what is important
  • Don’t dwell on time
  • Keep routine
  • Donate your time to what really matters
  • Make choices to do activities creating mobility and happiness
  • Reward yourself for completing “chores” you hate
  • You are not being selfish; you earned your retirement
